Why FSU?

I was inspired by my mentors, esteemed professors at Florida A&M University (FAMU), who earned Ph.D.'s at FSU. Florida State is also a popular school to study music because the musicology department has access to resources and facilities that many other universities do not. I'm excited about the potential of flexibility within the field through this program.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Education is the great equalizer. Insight and exposure within the field motivated me to pursue a graduate degree. After publishing research articles, I hope to secure a job as department chair and tenured professor at a Historically Black College or University similar to Florida A&M University.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

I research the efficacy, cultural relevance, and intentionality of American music education programs of the 21st century. My research is important because it brings awareness, reverence and dignity to music makers that have been carefully extracted from the conversation. My goal is to develop a comprehensive pedagogy series increasing student engagement and improving cultural responsiveness in music education.

Career aspirations

I aspire to continue in the current trajectory of my career path thus far. I will always be an educator and performer; and I hope to soon also be a lecturer and author. My ultimate hope is that I will be compensated appropriately for my work and skill set.  My long term goal is to become a tenured professor and eventually a department chair at a Historically Black College or University.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Know your worth and know your why. Studying at this level requires you to bring forth what is within you and to appear more boldly than studying at other levels of education.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I was selected for the Legacy Fellowship at FSU and also recently received the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship
