"Education is the key to success"

College: Social Work
Degree Program: Social Work
Degree: Master's

Why FSU?

I am a Florida native. I have always wanted to earn a degree from Florida State University. I couldn't pass on this opportunity to pursue a Master of Social Work (MSW).

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

My wife and I have always stressed education to our children. I waited so long to earn my undergraduate degree, and I had to keep going to be an example to them.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

Addiction is something that many veterans suffer from. Self-medicating with alcohol, prescription drugs, and illicit drugs has destroyed the lives of many veterans and their families. I want to be in a position to help my fellow veterans deal with the issues that have led to addiction and intervene to get their lives and families back on track.

Describe an aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional

I had the opportunity to spend three years as a Drill Sergeant. It was a pleasure to train some of America's best and brightest.

Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies

I spent twenty-three years in the US Army. Being exposed to diverse people and cultures has given me an open mind and the understanding that being different from each other doesn't mean we can't live, work, and accomplish incredible things together.

Career aspirations

After finishing my MSW, I plan to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). I have received so much from the VA and want to give back to my fellow vets.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Don't wait. There is no time like the present.
