Why FSU?

FSU is home to world-renowned researchers and professors, and it fosters an enabling environment for creativity and impactful research. I was attracted to the Material Chemistry program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I want to be part of the good forces that shape the world for the better through innovative research. As it is known, advancement in technology and medicine depends on new discoveries and that’s why I have taken this path of painstakingly searching, researching, and discovering.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My research seeks to explore and discover new functional materials for the next generation of optoelectronics devices with a focus on hard radiation (gamma and X-ray) detection. The importance of this ranges from accurate medical diagnosis and treatment to industrial quality control, national security, and scientific research. The new functional materials aim to solve the high cost of production, efficiency, importantly, toxicity issues of existing materials.

International Education Experience

My international background has played a significant role in shaping who I am today. Growing up in Nigeria exposed me to a diverse and vibrant culture. I was born in Abeokuta in south southwestern part of Nigeria and developed an appreciation for the history and natural beauty of the region. The city's name, meaning "under the rock," reflects its geological landscape dotted with numerous rocks. These rocks served as a symbol of refuge during times of war, adding a layer of historical significance to the city. My family later moved to Port Harcourt, located in the south southern part of Nigeria. Growing up in Port Harcourt exposed me to the complexities of the oil industry and its impact on the region's development. It was an enriching experience as I interacted with students from diverse backgrounds, broadening my understanding of different cultures and perspectives. After completing my secondary education, I pursued a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State. Established in 1948, the university is the oldest in Nigeria and one of the most prestigious. Studying at this esteemed institution provided me with a solid academic foundation and further expanded my worldview.

Nigeria itself is a melting pot of cultures and traditions. Nigeria is home to the largest population of black people in the world, with over 200 million people residing in the country. The country also has a diverse cultural heritage, with over 250 different ethnic groups, each with its own unique language, traditions, and festivals.

Studying in the US, a country known for being among the most technologically advanced in the world, has truly been an incredible experience. This nation offers abundant resources that mold talented individuals and facilitate ground-breaking scientific research. The sheer availability of resources for conducting research is exhilarating and it is further enhanced by the diversity of backgrounds among fellow students and researchers, which fosters innovative breakthroughs. In addition, serving as a teaching assistant has been a rewarding experience that I hold dear. The unique teaching environment found here would be difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I’m proud of my journey and the opportunity to grow as a scientist, gain fundamental understanding and discover. It’s exciting to be able to contribute to the body of knowledge through research, conference presentations, and peer-review publications.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

As many know, good results demand effort, dedication, and resilience and that is what graduate school demands. Graduate school tests all of this but it’s a worthy journey.

Career aspirations

After graduate school, I will love to continue to pursue impactful research work in either industry or academia.
