Motivation to pursue graduate studies at FSU
My motivation to pursue a graduate degree stemmed from a desire to expand my knowledge while making meaningful contributions in my field. I wanted an environment that encouraged rigorous research and practical application of my skills. FSU stood out to me because of its strong academic reputation that supports both personal and professional growth in a vibrant community that fosters collaboration. Additionally, the faculty at FSU are leaders in their fields and provide mentorship that is challenging as well as inspiring, which has been invaluable to my academic journey.
Importance and/or impact of research
My research in Spanish phonetics and phonology, with a focus on acoustic analysis, plays a crucial role in understanding how sounds are produced, perceived, and distinguished in the Spanish language. This work contributes to broader linguistic insights, helping to reveal patterns and variations in pronunciation across different Spanish-speaking regions. Additionally, acoustic analysis allows for precise measurement of sounds, which can aid in fields like language teaching, speech therapy, and even technology, where accurate speech recognition is essential. Ultimately, my research supports efforts to bridge linguistic theory and practical applications in communication.
Career aspirations
My career aspirations are to become a professor and researcher in linguistics, specializing in Spanish phonetics and phonology. I aim to contribute to the academic community through innovative research and engage students with a dynamic, culturally relevant curriculum. Additionally, I want to empower students to pursue their academic goals, helping them navigate their educational journeys and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Ultimately, I hope to inspire future linguists to explore the complexities of language and its role in shaping human experiences.
Most influential individuals throughout graduate journey
My advisor, Dr. Carolina Gonzalez, has been the most influential person in my graduate journey. Not only does she have the career I aspire to, but she also brings enthusiasm and dedication to her teaching and mentorship. I’ve had the privilege of taking several classes with her, such as Spanish Phonetics, Sounds of the World’s Languages, and The Art of Invented Languages, each expanding my understanding and passion for the field. Beyond academics, she creates a unique bond with her students by teaching us flamenco dancing, which we then perform on campus, fostering both community and cultural appreciation
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
If you're considering graduate school, take time to reflect on your goals and motivations for pursuing an advanced degree. Graduate school is a significant commitment, so make sure your program aligns with both your academic interests and long-term career plans. Reach out to current students and faculty to learn about the department culture, expectations, and resources; their insights can give you a realistic view of daily life in the program. Lastly, be prepared to balance self-motivation with resilience. Graduate school requires you to take charge of your own learning while navigating the inevitable challenges. It offers immense growth, but it also requires perseverance through challenges.
Accomplishments during graduate career
One accomplishment I’m especially proud of is traveling to Spain to collect recorded data for my dissertation research on two distinct Spanish dialects from the north and south. Despite being highly proficient in Spanish and naturally extroverted, this was the single most challenging experience in my academic career. I gathered valuable data from 29 participants, which will significantly enhance the depth and quality of my research.
