Why FSU?

Prior to my doctoral studies, I attended FSU as a Master of Music student. I was initially drawn to FSU because of the faculty and the community of musicians within the College of Music. After my master's degree, I decided to continue my studies at FSU because of the motivating and encouraging environment that I have already received.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Coming from a family of educators, I knew that I always wanted to be an educator. In my opinion, the impact of an educator who is experienced and cares about their students' future is insurmountable. With this goal, I knew that I would need to pursue graduate studies in order to gain the training and expertise necessary to become an impactful teacher.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My research will be focused toward underrepresented composers. As a black woman, I was not exposed to the range of music within the realm of classical music that was written by members of marginalized communities. My research will be helpful to both performers and educators by studying works that are not a part of the standard canon of classical music.

Career aspirations

I hope to become a collegiate professor of violin as well as a professional orchestral musician. In my position as an educator, my goal is to write scholarly works and present lectures focusing on underrepresented composers and the importance of representation in music. In doing so, my hope is to work toward a music industry that is truly representative of the diversity, equity, and inclusion that music encompasses.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

My advice to anyone considering graduate school is to allow yourself to be inspired, both by your professors and your colleagues. Graduate school is a wonderful opportunity to work with people in your community and learn from their experiences. In addition, graduate school allows you to create a network of professionals who will guide and nurture you toward your dream career.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I will be receiving the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship at the start of my doctorate, and I was awarded the Wilson-Auzenne Graduate Assistantship for Minorities during my master's.
