Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

My inspiration for pursuing a graduate degree comes from a strong commitment to expanding my knowledge and using it to uplift the next generation of musicians. As both a performer and educator, I recognize the importance of refining my craft, expanding my research, and enhancing my ability to inspire students. I selected Florida State University because it provides an environment where performance, scholarship, and community engagement are all equally valued and supported.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

This study highlights the resilience, creativity, and stylistic approaches of six prominent African American composers: Adolphus Hailstork, Ulysses Kay, Charles Lloyd Jr., Regina Harris Baiocchi, Gary Nash, and Longineu Parsons. Their work will help expand the trumpet repertoire and support greater inclusion of music in academic, professional, and concert settings.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

I recommend researching the institution that interests you and aligns with your values. Additionally, having a clear idea of what you would like to do regarding research topics is essential.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I established Trumpet Outreach for Youth Education (T.O.Y.E.), a nonprofit that offers free and affordable trumpet lessons, workshops, and performance opportunities for students in underserved communities. Through T.O.Y.E., I organize masterclasses, school visits, and community events to enhance access to music. It is meaningful to me because I was once in a place with minimal to no access to music education. I would like to change that and help and assist students with receiving a better education.

Career aspirations

I want to become a college professor at an accredited College or University. Continue my vision and plan within the community engagement.
