Degree Program: Mechanical Engineering
Degree: Doctorate
Why FSU?
I have always wanted to pursue a PhD, inspired by my father who holds one himself. I have also had a passion for both Mechanical Engineering and helping people. When I saw the opportunity at FSU to work on a project that combines both, it felt like a perfect fit. The chance to apply my skills and knowledge while making a real difference was exactly what I had been searching for. I chose FSU because of my advisor, the university’s diversity, and its welcoming environment, and to this day, I continue to feel that sense of belonging.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research focuses on understanding the impact of fuel moisture on fire and plume behavior. Fuel moisture plays a critical role in fire behavior and can change rapidly, influencing how fires ignite and spread. Accurately predicting these moisture levels is essential for managing prescribed burns, as even small fluctuations can drastically alter fire dynamics. To address this need, our work involves developing a physics-based model that predicts fuel moisture variation and its effects on fire and plume behavior. By incorporating real-time data on weather and fuel properties, this model will enhance our understanding of fire behavior and its underlying causes, ultimately aiding in better decision-making during prescribed fires and wildfires.
Career aspirations
I aspire to be a researcher, likely within academia. I enjoy both teaching and research, as they allow me to explore new ideas while also guiding and inspiring the next generation of students. My goal is to make meaningful contributions to the field of fire science through research.
Who has been most influential in your graduate journey and why?
The most influential person in my graduate journey has been my advisor. Her approach to problem-solving and the way she tackles challenges is something I admire and strive to learn from. Beyond her technical expertise, she has a unique ability to bring out the best in people.
Accomplishments during graduate career
Last year, I wrote a story that has been accepted for inclusion in the anthology For All the Curious Girls: Stories of Wonder, Exploration, and Scientific Discovery, scheduled for release on October 14, 2025. This anthology, aimed at middle-grade students, is designed to inspire interest in fluid dynamics and STEM careers. Additionally, I am proud to have the award for "Best Explanation of a Complicated Subject" in the Inaugural Graduate Student Op-Ed Competition.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
If you're considering graduate school, focus on two key factors: the topic and the advisor. Choosing a research area that genuinely interests you will keep you motivated throughout the journey. Equally important is finding an advisor whose mentorship style aligns with your learning needs, as they will play a crucial role in your personal and professional journey.
