Why FSU?
FSU is known for its strong graduate programs in a variety of fields and offers research opportunities, funding, and other resources. Before I got accepted into FSU Department of Electrical Engineering, I met my current advisor, Dr. Petru Andrei, who is a very nice professor. He is the key point that made me choose FSU for my PhD degree.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
As an undergraduate student, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. I was drawn to the idea of pursuing a PhD in order to explore the limitations of a specific scientific area, which aligned with my aspirations. To me, being able to contribute to human scientific history in an unexplored area is a privilege and reflects my personal values. Even if my contributions are small, I am motivated to create value through my research, no matter the scale.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
Currently I am working on zinc ion batteries, a type of secondary battery that is currently being developed as a potential alternative to lithium ion batteries. These batteries have several advantages, including low cost and environmental friendliness. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, making it an attractive alternative to the rare and expensive materials used in lithium ion batteries. Additionally, zinc ion batteries are more stable and have a lower risk of overheating or catching fire compared to lithium ion batteries. Overall, the development of zinc ion batteries could have a significant impact on the energy storage industry, providing a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for various applications.
Career aspirations
Once I receive my PhD degree, I aspire to work for a battery company where I can create tangible value. My goal is to develop technology that can be applied to practical batteries for commercial release. I am excited to contribute to the innovation and growth of the energy storage industry and to help bring sustainable and efficient battery solutions to market.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Graduate research is a specialized area of study that is focused on a particular scientific field. It requires a high degree of self-motivation and independent learning. The knowledge and expertise needed to conduct research must be gained through the study of published papers and other resources, rather than solely relying on guidance from a teacher or advisor. If you have a passion for conducting research and you are willing to put in the effort to pursue your interests, then graduate research may be a rewarding path for you to explore.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I attended the 242nd ECS conference and presented my research with a poster. I will attend the 243rd ECS conference to present three posters. I am also pleased to be a finalist for the 2023 Student Excellence in the Visual Arts Exhibition.
