Why FSU?

Florida State University has a culture unmatched by other universities and the opportunity to study in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry could not be denied. The research that this University has produced has cemented its legacy and it is something I want to represent with my degree. There is a pride in being a nole that is rivaled by few students from other universities.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

The more you learn the more you realize you don't know. Even after obtaining a graduate degree, you still won't make a dent in what is left to learn about in a field. The learning done while pursuing a graduate degree, however, does set the foundation for a lifetime of learning and asking questions. This journey of learning isn't complete without the pride of saying "I have a Ph.D.".

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My current work on biomass plastics can reduce the dependence on the petroplastics consumed today. Biomass plastics are produced from renewable resources and will assist in the transition to greener/cleaner chemistry; this goes beyond the plastics themselves. The production of biomass plastics are also greener than petroplastics and can have properties that are competitive with the plastics used today.

Career aspirations

I would like to use my education to go into the production industry and produce groundbreaking chemistry that has an impact on our transition to a greener world. I also hope to return the support I've received in my education and persuade the next generation to believe in their individual ability.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

If you're considering attending graduate school, choose a subject you enjoy, as it will consume your life for years to come. That being said you don't need to come in as an expert. As long as you enjoy what you study and are willing to learn, you will succeed.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I am proud to have been awarded the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship (2023).
