Why FSU?

While in the Army I used to visit Tallahassee with friends and went to several sporting events. I liked the city and the campus, so when it came time to choose where to apply for graduate school, FSU was near the top of my list. The International Affairs Program facilitates flexibility in studies, allowing me to focus on US Foreign Policy and US Intelligence Policy studies. There is something for everyone interested in the many aspects of international affairs.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

After the Army I wanted to pivot my knowledge and skills into a new career field. Pursuing a graduate degree allowed me to do just that. I worked on my operations and planning skills and enhanced them with intelligence studies skills such as intel reports, writing daily briefs, and breaking down information for the key points. A graduate degree allowed me to specialize in one area, highlighting my knowledge and skills in this area.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

A lot of my research through my program revolved around terrorism and conflicts, particularly in Africa. I examined various conflicts across the continent and how the US was involved in peace and stability operations. This allowed me to examine the terrorism aspect and the US involvement through the Global War on Terror.

Describe an aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional

One memorable aspect was the friends and family I made in the Army. Through shared hardships we forged meaningful friendships that span years. That is something I've carried with me through my time at FSU.

Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies.

All the time spent working on presentations and briefings allowed me to be more comfortable when participating in or conducting presentations in graduate school. Additionally, the time management skills I sharpened in the Army made it easier to plan out my time as a student.

Career aspirations

I would like to pursue a career in the foreign service with the Department of State following my experiences at the State of Florida doing crime intelligence with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. However, I would also enjoy a career in the outdoor industry mentoring and teaching the next generation.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Just do it. Graduate school is an experience that will only help you.

Accomplishments during your graduate career

While at FSU I was awarded the 2LT Sisson Outstanding Veteran Scholarship. Helping to steward the profession and help others has been paramount to my experience here at FSU.
