Why FSU?

I chose FSU’s Ph.D. program because it allowed me to work with a mentor who shares my research interests. My academic mentor, Dr. Kelly Farquharson, is interested in the overlap between speech sound disorders (SSDs) and literacy impairments. Being a student in Dr. Farquharson’s Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound Lab (CLaSS Lab) has given me valuable research experience. In particular, I have gained experience in project management, data-driven decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration, and academic writing. The PhD program at FSU is equipping me to become an independent academic researcher in the field of communication science and disorders.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I was inspired to pursue a Ph.D. because I wanted to conduct meaningful research that improves the speech production and literacy outcomes of children with SSDs. I also wanted to train the next generation of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in implementing effective assessment and treatment practices for children with SSDs.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

SSDs are one of the most prevalent communication disorders in the pediatric population. Additionally, children with SSDs face a higher risk of encountering reading difficulties. Research on the connection between SSDs and literacy is essential for enhancing the academic outcomes of this population.

Career aspirations

After earning my Ph.D., I aspire to work in a tenure-track faculty position concentrating on SSDs and literacy.
