Why FSU?

Florida State has a stellar reputation nationwide and a massive alumni network. U.S. News and World Report, among other trusted sources, has ranked FSU's programs in the top tier. It is also an excellent value. In the School of Information, I have taken classes from talented professors educated at Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Washington University in St. Louis, Berkeley, Vanderbilt, UNC, and Georgia Tech; at FSU you get an excellent education at an affordable price.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Today’s labor market is growing increasingly competitive. You must be marketable to corporations and more than earn your pay by contributing with valuable skills and teamwork. I have gotten my MBA (2020 - 3.8), Juris Master (2022 - 4.0), and am currently working on a Master's of Science in Information Technology (2023?). I have seen these pursuits benefit other professionals.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

I have a background in healthcare administration with the Army Medical Service Corps. That career gave me invaluable experience, for which I am ever thankful, but I wanted to build on it. Everything now is information-linked or driven. Mastering IT will bolster efficiency and profits.

Describe an aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional

I joined the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was first stationed in Hawaii, my first choice. The US military is all-volunteer, and I met some amazing people during my time in the service…real heroes. I used to work where they tested the first nuclear weapon, and I served in aviation overseas.

Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies.

The Army (and all branches of the military) emphasizes teamwork, fitness, reliability, courage, respect, honor, integrity, and service to others. Get up, clean up, dress up, show up, and don’t give up. My time serving in an Infantry unit taught me to persevere and be appreciative of things most people take for granted.

Career aspirations

I would love to continue a civilian career in healthcare administration where I can apply my experience and education. I have experience in business and government as well, keeping options open.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

The key to getting ahead is getting started, said Mark Twain. Apply yourself and you will be amazed at the outcome. It takes discipline and effort, and you get out what you put in.
