Why FSU?
As soon as I stepped on FSU's campus as an undergraduate, I knew that FSU cared for more than just test scores. They wanted to see us thrive. When God called me to law school, I wasn't sure what school that would lead me to, but the right doors opened to stay at Florida State University. I am thankful I stayed. I have learned and grown so much through pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at FSU.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I crave change. Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a heart for justice. The more I learned throughout my life, the more I saw the brokenness of the systems in America. Many lies are winning. I knew I couldn't be complacent in this reality but needed to step into the system's brokenness to change what continues to break my heart. The field of law allows me to come alongside people in some of their most challenging moments and provide legal care. One day I want to change the policies that are hurting our very neighbors.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I look at the law as a social service and the opportunity of providing legal care. Especially in my work experience through criminal law, it is an honor to meet with people in some of their most challenging life moments to explain the legal system, counsel, teach, and empathize with their hurt. We all need an advocate, and it's an honor to get to advocate for people. I believe in redemption—because I know there are many times in my life when I needed redemption too.
Career aspirations
I desire to step into the field of Public Interest Law, but I am still working out the details. I would love to provide legal care for people who can't afford it, address some injustices like human trafficking, and one day shape policies. Policies are often shaped by people far removed from the problem, and I would love to bridge that gap so that the change in the law is representative of the people who need those changes.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Don't stay comfortable. If there is something that breaks your heart, or something you feel the burden of changing, don't let that dream slip away. Challenge your fears, let your courage rise, and go for it. The world is full of broken dreams, and your very dream may be the hope someone is praying for.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I work as a Trial Team Certified Legal Intern for the Public Defender's Office. I work in helping advocate for trafficked persons through the Human Exploitation Law Project, and I am president of the Christian Legal Society. I am also part of the Legislative Fellows Program.
