Why FSU?
FSU had been my college of choice since I was a high school graduate, but life had taken me in a different direction. After a few years in the service, the opportunity to pursue my dream of attending FSU was available again, and I was so glad to have been given that opportunity.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I am a first-generation college student, so creating a legacy for my family is important. Before I decided to pursue my master's, I was so hesitant, not knowing what to expect, but I have always had a passion for learning and I love a good challenge, so pursuing a Juris Master in Financial Regulation and Compliance was a natural next step for me.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
Being able to delve into compliance has allowed me to gain a new and more in-depth perspective on current processes and improve those processes for my fellow service members. The knowledge I have obtained so far has already showed its worth, and it provides me with ability to hold our organizations to a higher standard.
Describe an aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional
Currently, I am an instructor and course manager for seven courses in the Navy training pipeline. Teaching the next generation of service members has been extremely rewarding. I have also facilitated the revision of courses, contributed to curriculum, and upheld Navy Learning Standards, resulting in my nomination as Instructor of the Year for 2022.
Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies
Throughout my service, I have held a variety of responsibilities, all of which have involved compliance and regulation. The exposure to legal documents, processes, and requirements aided in my navigation of the courses in the program. As an analyst, the ability to research and question was especially helpful.
Career aspirations
I hope to combine my expertise as an analyst with the knowledge gained through this program to pursue a career in financial regulation, primarily in the area of money laundering and illegal activity.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
If you even have the slightest desire to pursue a graduate degree, do it! The experience, the instructors, and the knowledge is invaluable, and you will not regret it.
