"Learning to solve problems and lead"
College: Arts and Sciences
Degree Program: Neuroscience
Degree: Doctorate
Why FSU?
I chose FSU for Dr. Lisa Eckel, my mentor, and the rich culture of ingestive research present in the Department of Psychology.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I fell in love with understanding the brain during my first course in behavioral neuroscience. From there, I began to conduct research and immediately knew it was want I wanted to do with my life. Understanding the brain is the key to understanding how the mind interacts with the world.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research focuses on the relationship between taste and dysregulated eating in rodent models of obesity, binge eating, and anorexia. Eating disorders and overconsumption of unhealthy foods are growing problems in the modern world. Taste plays a large role in regulation of what nutrients we consume. Understanding how taste and diet interact may provide a treatment target for patients with dietary issues.
Career aspirations
I hope to work as a research professor, directing a large taste lab at an R1 institution.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Never sell yourself short and don’t be afraid to reach out to those you want to work with. Many academics love to help students grow into strong scientists.
Accomplishments during your graduate career
Obtaining grant funding for my first year at the institution.
