Why FSU?
Having witnessed the swift changes and difficulties experienced by cities around the world, I am motivated to aid in the creation of resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban environments. This interest led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning. The research conducted in the FSU Department of Urban and Regional Planning, along with the interdisciplinary approach to urban planning, is impressive. The faculty have demonstrated their expertise through numerous publications and the high quality of information shared with students. My enthusiasm to collaborate with esteemed scholars and fellow students who share my passion for urban and regional planning is what pulled me to the department and to FSU, and I am confident that the rigorous Ph.D. program will provide me with the necessary theoretical knowledge, research skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives to make meaningful contributions to the field.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
Collaborative governance offers a valuable framework for addressing the complex issues faced by societies affected by forced migration resulting from armed conflict. My research examines the role of collaborative governance in urban planning within post-conflict environments, with a particular focus on the influence of migrants and refugees on housing in the host nation. Its importance lies in the analysis of how collaborative strategies can aid in the formulation of inclusive policies for the development of housing infrastructure.
Career aspirations
After graduation, I hope to continue researching the topic of armed conflict and its impact on urban and regional planning in various areas and contribute to academia by providing pertinent literature. I also plan to teach the subject.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Moving on to graduate school is dependent on one's purpose, which will later guide the program selection process. One must understand why they wish to engage in graduate studies, whether it is for career advancement, academic curiosity, or to enhance professional credentials. Financial realities, namely the cost of attending school versus the return on investment, must be considered, as well as the funding opportunities available to cover expenses. In the end, consider the problems you want to solve in life and whether a graduate degree will get you closer to solving them. Decide whether you are ready for the intellectual and emotional demands that are expected and whether the program of choice will expand your capacity to lead, teach, or transform systems.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I guest lectured at the University of Technology, Jamaica and at the Florida State University, Department of Urban and Regional Planning. I have also presented at the Caribbean Urban Forum in Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, I am conducting research on Food sovereignty, agroecology, and climate justice in Puerto Rico and Critical discourse analysis of Haitians in the media. Lastly, I received a Honorable Mention for Best Use of Evidence in the 2025 FSU Op-Ed Competition. The opportunities presented were most meaningful as they provided the catalyst for showcasing my abilities
