Why FSU?

I applied to FSU due to the faculty, reputation, and funding opportunities in the Department of Art. What sealed my decision to attend was leaving the interview process feeling like I not only learned something about the school, but also something about myself as an artist based on my conversation with a faculty member. I thought that if I could learn something so important from just an interview, then I could only imagine how much I might learn and grow after three years.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My work tells untold stories of women in history--specifically, my thesis tells the story of my ancestor, Susanna Milliken, a pioneering "doctoress" who lived on Mount Desert Island, Maine, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Her story has been erased over time--barely remembered in history--whereas her male counterparts are revered and remembered by archives. I hope this work not only tells an important figure's story, but also makes others reflect on the hidden stories in their own histories.

Career aspirations

I plan to continue working on my artistic and research practices and sharing my work at exhibitions. I also aim to teach at the university level to continue connecting and working with future artists and thinkers.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Come in with an open mind, ready to learn, change, and experiment. Research what program will offer you the best experience, from the faculty, funding, and location, but remain open to new possibilities

Accomplishments during graduate career

I am proud to have been a part of many exhibitions during my time at FSU, most notably a group exhibition of emerging Florida artists at Zilberman Gallery in Miami, FL last summer. In 2025, I was also selected as a finalist for the HSF Graduate Student Excellence in the Visual Arts Award
