Why FSU?
I chose to attend FSU's combined Counseling Psychology and School Psychology program because it uniquely integrates two fields that are important to me. This program offers a comprehensive approach to mental health and educational support. My experience in teaching and clinical social work highlighted the need for professionals who can bridge these areas. FSU's program provides the advanced training and interdisciplinary perspective required to effectively address diverse student needs. Additionally, FSU's strong reputation and experienced faculty were key factors in my decision.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
Witnessing the profound impact of trauma on children and families motivated me to deepen my understanding and expand my skills. My experiences as a teacher and therapist revealed gaps in addressing these needs effectively. Pursuing a doctoral degree in psychology enables me to contribute more significantly to the healing and development of those affected by trauma.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research into childhood trauma prevention and school-based interventions is crucial for fostering healthier developmental trajectories for affected children. By identifying effective strategies to mitigate the impacts of trauma within educational settings, we can create supportive environments that promote resilience and academic success. This work not only addresses immediate emotional and behavioral challenges but also reduces long-term adverse outcomes, such as mental health issues and poor academic performance. Ultimately, it aims to equip schools with the tools necessary to support vulnerable students, enhancing their overall well-being and future prospects.
Career aspirations
As a therapist pursuing a doctoral degree in school and counseling psychology, my career aspirations include becoming a leading expert in the development and implementation of effective school-based interventions for children and adolescents. I aim to work within educational settings to enhance mental health support systems, promote resilience, and improve academic outcomes for students. Additionally, I aspire to conduct impactful research that informs best practices and policies in school psychology. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the training and development of future psychologists, ensuring a continued focus on evidence-based approaches to support the mental health and well-being of young people.
