Why FSU?

During my search for a high-ranking Management in Information Systems (MIS) program, I continually found myself reading about FSU's Master of Business Administration in MIS. Following much research and prayer, I concluded that this was the program that will best prepare me for my future endeavors. I decided to change my plans from pursuing an MIS degree to an MBA in MIS and haven't regretted that decision one bit.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Being a first-generation college graduate in my family always motivated me. I have the utmost respect for my parents and siblings, but being the only one to graduate with a four-year degree was special to me. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I knew that my next step was to obtain my master's degree. After marrying my wife and having two amazing children, life seemed to get in the way. It wasn't until last year that I realized now is a better time than ever, so I applied to the MBA program at FSU. Six months into the program, my wife and I found out that we were expecting a third child. I would be lying to say that balancing life/work/school has been easy, but the knowledge and experience I'm gaining from graduate school is worth every minute.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

I wasn't sure what to expect with a graduate degree, but after my first semester with Dr. Xinlin Tang, I realized how applicable this degree is to my current profession. I can learn something during class on Monday, and immediately apply it at work on Tuesday morning. The benefits of this degree have already been worth their weight in gold.

An aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional

During my military service, I met some of the brightest, most hard-working, and most loyal individuals that this country has to offer. My international travels allowed me to learn about other cultures and to see parts of the world that I never would have otherwise.

Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies

Growing up, I wasn't your typical student. I was rough around the edges, lacked discipline, and never planned on pursuing a degree after high school. After separating from the United States Air Force in 2011, I decided to enroll at The Citadel to pursue my bachelor's degree in business administration and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. While attending, I realized that I thoroughly enjoyed learning. Oddly enough, I found myself wanting to learn more about the subject than what the professor had planned for us for the semester. This drive wouldn't have been possible without the integrity, discipline, and maturity that was instilled in me through the military.

Career aspirations

I would like to continue my work in the IT field, primarily in IT Project Management. Starting in IT roughly three years ago, I finally found "what I wanted to do when I grew up." Fortunately, I've moved up quickly in my current organization, largely due to my enjoyment of the work, and I aspire to create more personal growth and opportunity in the future.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Take the leap. There are a lot of reasons why you think you "can't" but believe me, you "can." You will never look back and regret that you learned more. Find the time, not the excuses, and you will be just fine.

Accomplishments during graduate career

During my graduate career, my wife and I welcomed our third child, I was promoted to Systems Manager at my current organization, and I ran my first half-marathon (finishing in 1:57).
