"A graduate degree cultivates knowledge"

College: Law
Degree Program: Juris Master's

Award: Legislative Fellows Program

Why FSU?

To pursue my Juris Master degree, I chose FSU because it is where I earned my bachelor's degree in Editing, Writing, and Media, with a minor in Humanities. I always knew that I wanted to combine journalism and law as a career path, and I have learned a great deal of information about both subject areas during my time at the University. FSU is an institution that sets its students up for their desired career paths, and I believe my story is just beginning.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

My motivation to pursue a graduate degree derived from wanting to expand my knowledge to be better equipped for any opportunity. There was a moment in my life when I was indecisive about attending college because I was afraid of failure. I have realized that the main reason for that sentiment had to do with the fact that I lacked self-confidence. Time and self-reflection have helped me see that anything in life is possible if one has faith to persevere through their struggles.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My graduate degree will be from the Juris Master Program, with a concentration in Employment Law and HR Compliance. The importance of this degree is to understand the different mediums within employment law and how an organization can find itself in trouble with the law because of illegal practices. Currently, I am a Florida Legislative Fellow within the House Democratic Office. This opportunity allows me the opportunity to analyze bills, attend committee meetings and floor sessions, and interact with members to help the state of Florida progress in a positive way.

Career aspirations

My career aspirations are to work within the Florida Legislature to help fight for racial equality, women's rights, gender equality, and justice. Also, I would like to travel to different countries as a journalist to write about triumphs and struggles within different societies.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

For those considering graduate school, I would advise to always believe in yourself no matter the obstacles that life throws your way. Graduate school is a great opportunity to venture into new possibilities for a prosperous future.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I am proud that I have been able to earn over 3.8 GPA in graduate school. Also, my acceptance into the Legislative Fellows Program is one of my greatest life achievements because I have learned a lot about public policy and the world of lawmaking.
