Getting a doctoral degree in American history has been something I’ve planned for since I was an 11 year old nerd who loved reading about the Civil War. Today I am a few short chapters from completing my Ph.D. in American history. Writing about inter-service relations and the formation of the Department of Defense in the aftermath of the Second World War, I have found a much more exclusive corner of the field than Civil War studies, and something that holds a great deal of relevance to current issues within the national security realm of the United States. I hope to use my work to pursue a career in either academia or the defense world, an effort that my 2017-2018 U.S. Army Center for Military History Dissertation Fellowship will certainly not hurt.
