Why FSU?
Both of my parents are lifelong public servants, and they have always inspired me. I watched as they dedicated their lives to bettering our community, and because of that, I have always wanted to follow in their footsteps. I chose to continue my education at FSU and pursue my MPA because its proximity to the Florida Capitol unlocks countless opportunities. Every day, I learn how legislation and public service can impact a community, and I am grateful to play a role in such an important process.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
Researching food deserts is incredibly important because it highlights significant disparities in food access, particularly in low-income and rural communities. Limited access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food contributes to higher rates of diet-related illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Understanding the causes and impacts of food deserts through research, including my own, enables public administrators to develop targeted solutions. Addressing food deserts can improve public health outcomes and promote food equity for underserved populations.
Career aspirations
I plan to work in government in a public service role, particularly in areas related to social services, public relations, and public policy. My MPA degree, combined with my bachelor’s degree in political science, equips me with the knowledge and skills needed for a variety of positions in public service while deepening my understanding of the inner workings of government. Overall, my goal is to serve the people of Tallahassee by helping them navigate government systems in ways that benefit them and improve their livelihoods.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
While graduate school is certainly demanding, it is also incredibly rewarding. The faculty is highly knowledgeable, and what I have learned has completely transformed my understanding—not only of my field, but also of the world around me. I have met so many wonderful people, and I truly believe that graduate school helps us become better versions of ourselves
Accomplishments during graduate career
In December 2024, I received an Honorable Mention for my submission in the Inaugural Op-Ed Competition. It means so much to me to have had the opportunity to receive recognition for research I am passionate about! Additionally, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while working and managing a full-time course load.
