The Department of Education has honored two FSU doctoral candidates for their outstanding graduate research proposals through the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships. Providing funding for up to 12 months of research abroad, the Fulbright-Hays Award encourages projects in area studies and modern languages outside of Western Europe.

Peter Hoesing, a Ph.D. candidate in the College of Music's Ethnomusicology Program, will be traveling to Uganda for research on the interplay of music and healing. His project, entitled "Music and Fruition: The Social Reproduction of Health Through Musical Spirit Mediumship," will include field research through interviews and participant observation as he works with traditional healers, ritual musicians, and patients.

In Japan, Bryan Rill will be pursuing his dissertation research on the spiritual healing practices of shugyo. As a doctoral candidate in Anthropology, Rill's study includes archival research and ethnographic data, through interviews and participant observation of these ascetic practices.
