The College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance wishes to congratulate our own Department of Art History doctoral student, Deirdre Carter, for being the first at Florida State University to receive the Schallek Fellowship.  The Schallek Fellowship is offered by the Medieval Academy of America in collaboration with the Richard III Society, American Branch. It will provide Ms. Carter with one full-year, $30,000 fellowship in memory of William B. and Maryloo Spooner Schallek.  The annual fellowship is open to applicants from any relevant discipline whose dissertation focuses on late-medieval Britain (ca. 1350-1500) and is a very unique opportunity only available to doctoral students in Canada and the United States.  It draws a wide array of applicants, with previous recipients from universities such as Harvard and Berkeley.
Deirdre works with Drs. Richard K. Emmerson and Paula Gerson.  This is a perfect pairing as Dr. Emmerson, an internationally renowned medieval scholar, and Dr. Gerson, who served as the Executive Manager of the International Center of Medieval Art at the Cloisters in New York City, provide invaluable guidance and mentorship to Deirdre on her interdisciplinary project. The first of its kind, Deirdre’s dissertation seeks to understand “Art, History, and the Creation of Monastic Identity at Late Medieval St. Albans Abbey.”

Deirdre is honored by her selection as the recipient of this distinguished award and looks forward to using the fellowship to travel to England and to complete her dissertation research.
