Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I decided to pursue a graduate degree because I've always loved learning and wanted to have a career centered on research. Graduate school is also a unique opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally. I chose FSU because the clinical psychology program is top-notch, as is my advisor, Dr. Thomas Joiner. I feel really grateful to be studying here!
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I study various aspects of suicidal behavior and suicide prevention, with a particular focus on how suicide risk manifests in marginalized and other high-risk populations. Suicide is preventable, and understanding these processes is essential to improving assessment and intervention efforts. I hope my work can ultimately reduce suffering and save lives.
Career aspirations
After graduation, I hope to join a research-focused university and lead a program of research on suicide. My ultimate goal is to continue advancing suicide prevention efforts through rigorous and impactful research.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
I would encourage them to explore different topics and areas and to do their research before committing to a graduate program. Graduate school requires a lot of time and energy, so approaching the decision thoughtfully can help ensure a strong fit and prevent ending up in a program that is not well aligned with their goals!
Accomplishments during graduate career
I am especially proud of my contributions to multiple peer-reviewed publications and my ongoing leadership and involvement in research projects on suicidal behavior and prevention. These experiences have allowed me to meaningfully contribute to the scientific literature while developing as a clinical scientist!
