Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I wanted to prepare myself to be able to teach college level art classes, and I wanted to further develop my research and art practice. I chose FSU for its impressive faculty and for its location. Tallahassee has many natural spaces and parks, which have inspired much of the work I make today.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I explore the intricate balance between human connection to landscapes and the ecological impact of human activity. I create sculptures, installations, and expanded forms of drawing and painting that depict how landscapes look today, where “pure” areas untouched by human excess no longer exist. Through my material investigation, I examine ecological damage while fostering environmental responsibility and co-existence.
Career aspirations
I hope to become a professor of art, and to develop a class based on sustainable art methods. I will travel outside of Florida in order to broaden my material research by exploring landscapes and natural materials that are foreign to me.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Don't doubt yourself. If you are willing to push yourself and have the drive to keep learning, then you belong in graduate school.
Accomplishments during graduate career
During my time in graduate school, I have had my work published in several magazines, I have curated an exhibition, presented my research at FSU's LINC Conference for Graduate Students, piloted an art internship program through Conservation Pathways, been awarded a residency at The Verdancy Project in Oregon, and have been accepted to the ArtFields Festival Competition in South Carolina. I am especially excited to participate in the ArtFields competition, as it is one of the most well-attended and prestigious art competitions in the South.
