Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
After completing my undergraduate degree in Political Science here at Florida State University, I wanted to strengthen my skills in advocacy, policy development, and professional networking to prepare for a career in government. I chose FSU’s prestigious Master’s of Applied American Politics and Policy program because it offers practical experience through instructors who work directly in Florida politics, and its location near the Capitol provides unique access to one of the most influential state governments in the country.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I am nearing the end of my five-year journey at Florida State University. In my final semester, I am completing my MAAPP practicum by working for the Florida Department of Health. For the last six months, I have been embedded in the agency’s legislative work, observing and supporting how health policy is shaped, coordinated, and implemented in real time. My work supports the department’s mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts.
Career aspirations
My greatest aspiration is to one day serve in the United States Congress. I have the passion and determination to become a trusted member of the political community. With my college degrees, I plan to help children receive the education and healthcare they need at an early age, giving them the best chance at finding success.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
I would recommend getting real experience in the field you’re interested in before committing to graduate school, even if it’s through an internship. Graduate programs are a major investment, and firsthand experience helps clarify whether the degree is necessary and how to make the most of it. Going in with that clarity makes the experience more focused and rewarding.
Accomplishments during graduate career
In March 2025, I was honored to receive the Gene and Julie Moran Scholarship for exceptional academic performance in the Master’s of Applied American Politics & Policy. Additionally, I was accepted into the highly selective Florida Gubernatorial Fellows Program, where I was placed with the Florida Department of Health to work on legislative and policy-related issues.
