Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

During my undergraduate studies, I always wanted to better understand the interesting physiology we covered in class. This interest led me to a master's program to continue to learn; however, some of my questions did not have answers. I had an advisor who told me some of these questions will have answers eventually and introduced me to research. I loved it.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My research is focused on adults with obesity and brain health. Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and cerebrovascular diseases. My dissertation will determine whether eight weeks of novel inspiratory muscle strength training improves cerebrovascular function.

Career aspirations

After I earn my PhD, I want to become a postdoctoral fellow at a leading clinical research center. I then want to establish my own research laboratory focused on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular health.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

If you’re considering a research-focused graduate program, I highly recommend finding a mentor who is the right fit—someone who not only guides you academically but also inspires and fuels your passion for research.

Accomplishments during graduate career

In terms of career accomplishments, I am most proud of earning an American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship. The most meaningful accomplishments have been conducting public outreach at a local grade school and science fair and getting children engaged with heart related research.
