Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
Prior to returning to school, I was a social studies teacher for two years in Hillsborough County- from the halls of middle school to the gates of FSU, I have always valued education. I was inspired to obtain a graduate degree in order to become an expert in the field of politics and public policy. For me, a graduate degree was the launching pad I sought in order to obtain the kinds of professional opportunities that I desired. FSU's prestigious MAAPP program offers a career-oriented route, preparing students to transition directly into roles in Florida's local and state government. FSU fosters an open-minded, academically rigorous, and fun academic environment, making it the only place that I wanted to be!
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I am nearing the end of my graduate journey here at FSU- this year, I am completing my MAAPP practicum by working at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection - Division of State Parks. It hardly feels like work, as in just a few short months I have had the opportunity to visit over 30 state parks! My practicum experience is a full rotation of everything that powers FL State Parks- park planning, building & design, natural and historic conservation and preservation, greenways & trails, legislative affairs, and more. My work helps to extend recreational opportunities to all Floridians, while simultaneously protecting our precious natural resources.
Career aspirations
I have learned that Florida's state capital is a small place- it seems that everybody knows everybody. My goal is to work in public service for the state of Florida, utilizing my skills and professional networking to help to create evidence-based, positive public policy that lifts up Floridians across our great state.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
First, it has to be FSU, of course! Second, network, network, network! From career fairs to happy hours to tailgates, stick your nose into everything, get involved, introduce yourself, apply- it is the only way to open the doors that you've always dreamed of.
Accomplishments during graduate career
While completing my practicum at the FL Department of Environmental Protection - Division of State Parks, I had the opportunity to create a manual on best practices & amenities for non-motorized paved trail in Florida. This manual- proposed at the quarterly Greenways & Trails council meeting in October and passed at the quarterly council meeting in December- is a one-stop guide for local governments, private organizations, and state agencies to refer to when they are constructing or maintaining paved trails here in Florida. I am proud of my initiative, my academic prowess, my writing, my presentation, and my final product in crafting a lasting mark during my short time in the Division of State Parks.
