Why FSU?
I chose FSU because of our strong Department of Philosophy. Specifically, our faculty members are particularly well known for being strong in action theory and free will, which are two of my main concentrations in philosophy. Aside from academic strengths, I also have always found FSU to be an amazing place to work and study. After my undergraduate experience here, I began to see FSU not only as an engaging academic environment, but also a new home.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
Originally, I planned on attending law school after my time as an undergraduate at FSU. But after choosing philosophy as a typical pre-law major, I became too obsessed with it to move on to something else. So, I decided that the only way to pursue my passion was a graduate degree.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research centers on the very foundations of ethics itself. Specifically, my goal is to make sense of how we can act morally in the commonplace circumstance we typically find ourselves in: ignorance and uncertainty. By engaging in ongoing philosophical debates, I hope to bring us closer to an understanding of how we might strive to be better people even when we aren't always sure how to do so.
Career aspirations
I hope to become a professor of philosophy. It is my dream to teach at a research institution where I can engage in advanced academic dialogues while also teaching students the basics of philosophy.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Do it! There is a lot of negativity surrounding graduate school, especially regarding job prospects in academia. But, you should weigh such considerations in light of what YOU wish to accomplish, which may go beyond job prospects and financial goals. I think that many people will find that the learning experience is worth it for its own sake.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I won the "Graduate Paper Award" at the 68th Annual Meeting of the Florida Philosophical Association, where I gave the plenary talk. I was also the third place winner of the 2023 Master's in Four Competition.
