"A life-changing opportunity"

College: Education
Degree Program: Sport Management
Degree: Master's

Why FSU?

My husband got a PhD offer from another university in Florida. FSU was my top choice when considering a graduate degree in the Sunshine State because of its academic prestige and curriculum. The Sport Management program in the College of Education provided me an opportunity to do a thesis track program so that I can learn how to do research and prepare for my PhD application.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I earned my first master's degree in Intercultural Communication back in 2016 in the United Kingdom. With a passion for soccer, I became a sports show producer and determined a lifetime goal of a career in the sports industry. In 2019, my husband got a PhD opportunity in the United States, and I got a chance to reflect on myself and consider the future. He shared much of his experience with me in his first year, which aroused my interests in pursuing an academic career. Why not? So, after four years working in the sports media industry, I decided to take a pause and pursue a degree in sport management at FSU.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My master's thesis aims at investigating distant fans' perceptions of sports rivalry and providing practical implications for the sports industry. As a president of an official Liverpool supporters' club, I noticed that distant fans should be treated as a distinct group since they have different perceptions and consuming behaviors compared to the local fans. Sports organizations, like the club or media broadcasters, could develop strategies to meet distant fans' needs so as to enhance their loyalty and engagement.

Career aspirations

I have received an admissions letter to a PhD program in sports business. I will keep learning and researching, and hopefully I will become a female faculty member in sport management someday.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

To sport management students, have a clear career goal (academic or professional) from the beginning. Even so, you always have a chance of trial and error until you discover your lifetime goal. For instance, I started my second master's degree at the age of 29, but I know I am on the right path.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I will graduate with a GPA of 4.00, and I am a finalist for the 2023 Master’s in Four Competition.
