Why FSU?
My passion for understanding how nutrition impacts chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes led me to pursue a graduate degree. I wanted to contribute to research that could inform preventive strategies and improve public health outcomes. Florida State University stood out for its strong focus on interdisciplinary research and its commitment to advancing knowledge in health and human sciences. At FSU, I’ve found the resources, mentorship, and collaborative environment I need to grow as a researcher dedicated to tackling some of today’s most pressing health challenges.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research explores how targeted nutritional interventions can influence metabolic pathways involved in the development of chronic diseases. By understanding the biological mechanisms linking diet and disease, my work aims to inform more effective prevention strategies and therapeutic approaches. This research is especially important given the rising global burden of lifestyle-related illnesses and the need for evidence-based solutions. Through support such as the American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship, I am able to contribute to the growing body of knowledge that connects nutrition science with real-world health outcomes.
Career aspirations
My long-term goal is to pursue a research-focused career that bridges nutrition science and chronic disease prevention. I aspire to contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions that improve metabolic health and reduce disease burden at the population level. Whether in academia, public health, or industry, I hope to lead research that informs policy and empowers healthier communities.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Graduate school is a challenging but deeply rewarding journey that demands persistence, curiosity, and a strong support system. Before you begin, take time to define your "why", what motivates you and what impact you hope to make. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who uplift you, and remember that success isn’t linear. It’s okay to ask for help, take breaks, and celebrate small wins along the way.
Accomplishments during graduate career
During my graduate career, I have been honored to receive several prestigious fellowships and awards, including the American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship and the Graduate Student Research and Creativity Award at FSU. I am also proud of my growing publication record, with numerous peer-reviewed articles contributing to the fields of nutrition and chronic disease prevention. Additionally, I’ve had the opportunity to present my research at national and international conferences, engage in interdisciplinary collaborations, and mentor undergraduate students, all of which have enriched my experience as a researcher and scholar.
