Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I had benefit remaining on my GI Bill and wanted to move to the next level of study in German. I had done 2 B.A. degrees at FSU and wanted to stay at home. My family is here, so I can see them. The Student Veteran Center and veteran community is great.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I mostly write on German poetry and short fiction. I think one of my papers this semester may be my extended paper in Spring '27 semester. I want to revise a course paper from Spring '24 when I have time, because an interpretation has been proposed on an important short story's influence, but never fully expounded.
Career aspirations
I applied for the Critical Language Scholarship 2026 to study Korean and hope to go there in the summer. I want to apply for a Fulbright to complete a project on Italian poetry. After graduating, I'd like to get a job with the federal government or military, possibly working overseas.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Be sure that it's something you want to study at a high level, because intrinsic motivation will be paramount. You may need to sacrifice things/activities but work them into your schedule, if possible. Consider bringing HW to social events and making notes/having thoughts when you're bored.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I tutor German at the SLANG tables at the Union. It gives me a chance to review and become more comfortable talking to people and teaching. I attend and help with as many CVA events as I can; it makes me feel useful and glad to help student veterans.
