She is also a prominent author, writing on religion, higher education, gender, labor, motherhood, and popular culture. Kelly is the author of four books: the award-winning Gospel According to the Klan: The KKK's Appeal to Protestant America, 1915-1930 (2011); The Zombies Are Coming! The Realities of the Zombie Apocalypse in American Culture (2013); Grace Period: A Memoir in Pieces (2017); and Sexism Ed: Essays on Gender and Labor in Academia (2018). Whether she's being interviewed by national news outlets as an expert on white supremacy or talking about her long journey out of academia at the local bookstore, Kelly combines her training as both a historian and a reporter to offer honest and insightful analysis and to expose systems of oppression and injustice.
