"Pursuing purpose, enhacning knowledge, unlocking opportunities”

College: College of Social Work & College of Social Sciences and Public Policy
Degree Program: Joint Pathway Program: Master of Social Work & Master of Public Administration
Degree: Master's

Why FSU?

I was drawn to the joint pathway program in Social Work and Public Administration, as it offers a unique opportunity to combine social justice with practical knowledge in governance and policy. The location of FSU in Tallahassee also played a significant role in my decision, as being in the capital of Florida provides numerous benefits and professional growth opportunities.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

After completing my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, I knew I wanted to pursue a graduate degree to broaden my interests, knowledge, and professional opportunities. My interest in obtaining a Master's in Social Work is rooted in my undergraduate experiences at the University of Florida's College Reach Out Program, Aces in Motion, and Pace Center for Girls, Alachua, where I was exposed to the critical challenges faced by disadvantaged youth in accessing quality education and support systems. These experiences sparked my passion for advocating for vulnerable populations and ultimately led me to pursue a Master of Social Work at FSU, the top Social Work program in the state.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

The importance of my work is addressing the systemic challenges faced by underserved communities. My dual focus on Social Work and Public Administration allows me to develop policies and programs that respond to immediate social needs and promote long-term sustainable change. By understanding the complexities of government operations and social services, I can advocate for vulnerable populations and promote policies that address their challenges and needs.

Career aspirations

My overall goal is to serve and improve the well-being of those who are vulnerable, in need, and underserved. I aspire to take on a leadership role within a nonprofit or government agency, where I can advocate for equitable resources, implement impactful programs, and drive positive change. Through my work, I hope to create sustainable solutions that empower communities and address systemic inequalities.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

I am proud of my experience as a Case Management Intern at FSU's Department of Student Support and Transitions. This role allowed me to apply my classroom knowledge in real-world settings and significantly enhanced my advocacy skills. Additionally, my involvement with the Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality as a Graduate Knight Fellow exposed me to local government operations and the importance of collaboration between departments. In this role, I have played an active part in organizing the Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprise (MWSBE) Academy workshop series and planning signature events, such as the Big Bend Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week and the inaugural Regional Supplier Diversity Symposium. This experience will be vital in any future leadership role I obtain, and I am extremely grateful.
