”To serve the underserved”

College: Medicine
Degree: Doctor of Medicine

Why FSU?

While first reading the FSU College of Medicine’s mission statement, I was enraptured by the emphasis placed on service to elder, rural, minority, and underserved populations. Additionally, I appreciated FSU’s efforts to transform the health of individuals as well as communities. Over the past three years, the FSU College of Medicine has provided me an inclusive environment, innovative curriculum, and service/research opportunities to help me accomplish my career goals. The beliefs I had about the medical program while first reading the program's mission statement continue to hold true today. I have found my place and people in the FSU College of Medicine and am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in the environment they have intentionally cultivated.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I chose to pursue a career in medicine after experiencing first-hand the impact that physicians can have on individuals, families, and communities. As a childhood cancer survivor, I was introduced to medicine at a very young age. The compassionate care and support my team of doctors, especially my community's pediatrician, provided showed me the humanity in medicine and inspired me to pursue the profession. I hope to follow in my pediatrician's footsteps by providing comprehensive and compassionate care to rural and medically underserved communities.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

Through my work with the FAMU-FSU-UNAH Global Health Collaboration project (GHCP), I have learned so much about myself, global health, and the importance of interprofessional collaboration and cultural competency in healthcare. This research experience has opened my eyes to the unique beliefs, values, and health practices held by the people of rural Honduras. Moreover, GHCP has helped me further my knowledge and appreciation for the challenges faced by rural and underserved populations across the globe. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunities that GHCP has provided to collaborate with and grow alongside other rising health and non-health professionals to learn about and promote health literacy and equity in rural Honduras.

Career aspirations

I aspire to pursue a career as a pediatrician, a physician who cares for tiny humans! My ultimate goal is to provide accessible, comprehensive, and compassionate care to children in underserved areas. I aim to build strong relationships with families, encourage parents, collaborate with community organizations, and advocate for policies that improve the health and well-being of children in rural communities. Children are the future, and I consider it a privilege to care for them.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

My advice for anyone considering graduate education would be to carefully research programs and schools that align with your personal, educational, and career goals. The environment in which you pursue graduate education is just as important as the degree you're pursuing. Search for the program that will provide the optimal environment for you to grow and meet your goals. You can do anything you set your mind to with the right support system backing you up!

Accomplishments during graduate career

I received the Chapman Scholarship for Humanism.
