Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I wanted to build off of my background in education, and gain hands-on, practical skills that would allow me to improve as an instructor and leader. I applied to FSU because I wanted a program that blended instructional design and emerging technology. Attending FSU allows me to study under professors who are leaders in their field that are shaping AI's role in education.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I am currently taking classes that focus on performance improvement and instructional systems. I hope to use this to improve training outcomes at US Coast Guard boot camp, or return to the Coast Guard's Deployable Specialized Forces and take on a role at the Coast Guard's Special Missions Training Center. My current course work is extremely important to me because I want to appropriately challenge the next generation of Coast Guard members, and get better at my job.
Career aspirations
I hope my career in the Coast Guard's Deployable Specialized Forces affords me the opportunity to balance operational and staff assignments where I can blend my passion for international relations, security and education. I am happiest when I can make positive impact serving others and will keep that as my career's "North Star".
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Find a program that equips you with skills you need to advance in your career and a program that excites you. The work will be tough, but if you find the right fit, it will all be worth it! Spend some time looking into the professors in your program, and try to take courses with instructors that inspire you, or instructors that are true leaders in their fields (bonus points for finding both!).
Accomplishments during graduate career
I am most proud of my selection as a McCain Global Leader. For me, education is a national security issue, and having the opportunity to blend my studies at FSU with a global cohort via the McCain Global Leaders program is exciting (and challenging to balance). This selection is made even more meaningful because I get to represent the United States Coast Guard and FSU, as the cohort works to honor the legacy of Senator John McCain.
