Motivation to pursue graduate studies at FSU
I always knew I would pursue a graduate degree and took a great deal of time considering where it would be. FSU's graduate program celebrates and encourages experimental work that breaks down boundaries between artistic mediums. I have had access to materials and tools I had never before touched, and can now proudly use them as consistent elements of my practice. My faculty both support and challenge me, helping me continue to grow in my practice. The community of peers and faculty I have built in my time here is a great advantage entering the deeply interconnected career of art.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
My research explores current legislation of reproductive rights contextualized by the history of medicine. This research confronts the disparity of medicine in relation to gender, sexuality, and race. With the complexity of these difficult topics, it can be challenging to begin a dialogue. My work is an entry point into the reproductive conversation, utilizing data-driven research to inform the audience. A core value of my practice is education and community connection are the greatest protections one can wield in the face of oppressive legislation.
Career aspirations
As long as I am making art, I will find joy in my life and career. I've considered for a long time the options of curatorial work or academia, both of which are supported by the program. Recently I also have found potential work with the theme park industry of my home town.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Graduate school is not the only path for an artist, but in my experience has been deeply beneficial for the career goals I aspire to. There is the direct benefits of the technical skills and academic feedback, but also the development of supportive network when you begin your practice. Be prepared, faculty will hold you to high standards and the workload reflects this.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I've had the privilege of being one of the Presidents of the League of Graduate Artist, coauthored a paper presented at European Network of Qualitative Inquiry (ENQI) in Scotland, and am a finalist for the 2025 HSF Graduate Student Excellence in the Visual Arts award. Within my practice, I am also proud of my medium exploration, embracing fiber art radical craft.
