Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
A scholarly focus on art from the perspective of making and educating has always been important to me. FSU offered the facilities and expertise I needed to truly begin pursuing these passions as a career. The opportunity to teach undergraduate courses alongside my studio research has been invaluable experience in actualizing my goals.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I research environmental mediation through papermaking with the processed fibers of locally sourced plants. This has resulted in a series of location-based plant paper. I express my experiences from source to sheet by altering their form through installation, paper engineering, drying techniques, and burning away fibers with the laser engraver.
Career aspirations
I aim to find a career in higher education within the fine arts. In doing so I hope to support my art practice and continue engaging with the wider artistic papermaking discourse.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
Research the graduate students and faculty, and don't be afraid to reach out. First hand experiences will always represent a program the best.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I have recently been accepted to present my natural fiber research alongside a panel of expert papermakers at at George Mason University's Paper as Politic Symposium. An exciting opportunity to engage with artists working in my medium.
