Why FSU?

I chose to attend FSU because I hope to study Submerged Archaeology. Dr. Jessi Halligan happens to be one of the few archaeologists looking at Paleoindian submerged artifacts, rather than shipwrecks. I was ecstatic to learn about her research, and I love that FSU has a smaller Anthropology department that offers a more personal experience.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I wanted to pursue my graduate degree for a couple of reasons. Getting my master’s would allow me to have more options in my future career. I would also be the first person in my family to complete my master’s, and they would be so proud.

Importance and impact of research

I believe my work is important because the past can tell us about the future and about ourselves. Archaeological sites have the power to teach us about our ancestors and to make us feel more connected to the places we call home. Archaeology can also provide insight into our future. With rapid climate change threatening sites all over the world, we need more people to care about our heritage and work to protect it. Archaeological sites are nonrenewable resources. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. So, we should do everything in our power to safeguard our past because it will only make our future brighter.

Advice for prospective graduate students

My advice would be to do your research on schools. There are so many programs out there with so many different advantages. I was lucky to find the program here at FSU, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. I'd also recommend some blue light blocking glasses because you'll be spending a lot of time looking at computer screens.

Accomplishments during graduate career

One accomplishment I am proud of since I've entered graduate school is becoming the deputy speaker of communications for the Congress of Graduate Students. It has allowed me to feel like I'm really having an impact here on campus.

Career aspirations

I hope to work as an archaeologist on submerged sites one day. I would love to put the experience I've gained in scuba diving to practical use, and it would be a dream to make a discovery that could tell us more about how the first people in the Americas got here and lived. I am drawn to careers that allow me to be outdoors, so I am also interested in working with the National Park Service as one of their archaeologists as well.
