Degree: Doctoral
Why FSU?
I chose FSU because of the academic community and mentorship available, and I just really love the Seminoles.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I wanted to improve the evidence base for speech-language pathologists working with young children with complex communication needs.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
I am researching evidence-based supports for toddlers with complex communication needs (currently, nonspeaking autistic children) that are both neurodiversity-affirming and able to be implemented by the adults children connect with the most- their caregivers! I believe communication is a human right and if we are able to provide supports to these families in the early years, their children can grow up to fulfill their communication potential.
Who has been influential in your graduate journey?
My son! Watching him learn, play, and socialize motivates me to make that a reality for all children.
Career aspirations
I would love to be an assistant professor at an R1 institution to continue my line of research.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
If it makes sense for your career goals, do it! You never regret learning more.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I am very proud of my F31! NIH funding is highly competitive and I put a lot of time and energy into developing a grant that is both methodologically sound AND can have a direct impact on the community it is meant to serve, while also growing me as an applied researcher. I am so grateful that the NIH saw utility in it.
I have received the NIH F31 predoctoral fellowship, and the Legacy Fellowship.
Hobbies outside academics
Playing with my son, reading, and getting outside!
