Why FSU?

I chose FSU because it is a premier institution that provides students with the resources, opportunities, and support needed to grow academically and professionally and become who they aspire to be.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I have always wanted to pursue a graduate degree because I want to build upon my knowledge and develop the skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in my field of study.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Urban Planning with a focus on transportation and neighborhood planning. I am also writing an article titled Beyond Traffic: Why Transportation Is Jamaica’s Next Development Challenge for publication in The Pendulum at Clemson University. This work is important to me because it allows me to engage intellectually, think critically, and explore solutions to persistent social and economic challenges.

Who has been influential in your graduate journey?

My family has been my constant source of support throughout my academic journey. Their encouragement has motivated me to continue pursuing my goals, even during challenging moments. Their belief in me has played an important role in my determination to complete my Ph.D. and make a meaningful impact through my work.

Career aspirations

My career goals are to successfully complete and defend my Ph.D., earn my AICP certification, and continue advancing my expertise as an urban planner.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

For anyone considering graduate school, my advice is to have a clear understanding of why you want to pursue an advanced degree and remain committed to that purpose. Graduate school will challenge you academically and personally, but it also provides opportunities to deepen your knowledge, conduct meaningful research, and grow professionally. Surround yourself with supportive mentors, faculty, peers, and family who will encourage you throughout the journey. Most importantly, remember: “If it is to be, it is up to me,” and never lose sight of who you aspire to become.

Accomplishments during graduate career

In Summer 2025, I completed my Graduate Student Mentor Training and mentored two students on a research project examining The Role of Affordable Housing Policies and Initiatives in Tallahassee, Florida. We presented our research at the UROP Symposium, giving us an opportunity to share our findings with the academic community. This experience was particularly meaningful because it allowed me to combine my passion for mentorship, research, and urban planning.
