"Advancing science, expanding knowledge, creating opportunities”

College: College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Program: Organic Chemistry
Degree: Doctoral

Why FSU?

I chose FSU because of my advisor’s research on complex molecule synthesis and reaction invention, as well as its advanced infrastructure and the many resources readily accessible to students.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

Through my undergraduate research in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis, I became passionate about synthesis and wanted to keep learning and developing my skills. I see a PhD as an opportunity to grow as a scientist and eventually apply that knowledge in the industry.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

Our research focuses on the total synthesis of biologically relevant small molecules, particularly complex natural products. We develop new synthetic strategies and reactions to efficiently access structurally complex molecules that have potential applications in pharmaceutical industry.

Who has been influential in your graduate journey?

My former PI during my undergraduate studies always encouraged me to work on different projects, attend conferences, and write papers, which allowed me to learn more about academia and motivated me to pursue graduate school to deepen my knowledge. My current PI also influences me every day by motivating me to work hard and continuously challenging me to learn and improve as a researcher.

Career aspirations

To work in the pharmaceutical industry.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Be resilient, work hard, and be consistent with your studies. There will be challenging moments, but stay committed to your goals and keep pushing forward. In the end, all the hard work will be worth it.

Accomplishments during graduate career

One of the accomplishments I am most proud of in graduate school is being awarded the NSF GRFP. It was especially meaningful to me because it recognized both my research proposal and the work I had built throughout my undergraduate studies, showing me that all the effort I put into my academic journey was worth it.

Hobbies outside academics

I like working out, going to the church and watching TV shows.
