Degree: Master's

Why FSU?
I chose Florida State University for the Master in Public Administration Program because I wanted the best possible program in the best possible location for the state of Florida. The location was spectacular with the state capitol being so close to the school. This location would allow for plenty of opportunity within state and local government along with allowing for the opportunity of a lifetime to work during the legislative session in Florida
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
I was motivated to pursue a graduate degree because I felt like I needed more experience and teaching to become the career public servant that I know I will be one day. I also felt like I needed to gain a much more comprehensive understanding of local government management, and the Askew School of Public Administration is the perfect place to be.
Importance and/or impact of research and work
Local government management is important because in many ways it will affect your daily life much more than the federal government or the state government. Local government solves problems that communities deal with every day, from fixing roads and running utilities to creating sound ordinances and maintaining parks. Effective local government creates great communities all around America.
Career aspirations
For anyone considering graduate school, I would say that you should spend twice as much time researching program alumni as you do the program. This research essentially would give you information on a lot of opportunities you can take during/after the program.
Advice for anyone considering graduate school
For anyone considering graduate school, I think it is really important to consider what your goals and aspirations are and that the school you select aligns. Graduate school is challenging and there are times where it's easy to feel overwhelmed. However, it becomes really rewarding when you see yourself progress either professionally in the knowledge you have or though having a positive impact on someone else. In order to get to that point, there are likely a number of long hours that have gone into it. All that is to say, be sure that you understand what your goals are, why you are pursuing a graduate degree in line with those goals, and how the degree will help you get there, and all of the hard work will be worth it and you will feel handsomely rewarded.
Accomplishments during graduate career
I am very proud of the two internships I am balancing in my first semester of the program. I love working for District Commissioner "Jack" Porter as a Social Media and Outreach Coordinator. Jack is also an alumnus of the Askew School of Public Administration and a fantastic role model to learn from as the youngest-ever district commissioner of Tallahassee. Working as a Strategic Development Team Intern for the Florida Department of Transportation has also been eye-opening and a great experience in understanding long-term project management. I am also proud to have received the Florida Gubernatorial Fellowship (2023).
