Degree Program: Industrial Engineering
Degree: Doctoral
Award: P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (2016)
Xin Shan is a P.E.O. International Peace Scholar pursuing a PhD in industrial engineering in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
Xin is currently working on developing novel optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors using organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite semiconductor materials. Her research on the perovskite/polymer composites uses a single-layered structure, which greatly simplified the perovskite LED manufacturing process. Xin also initiated the development of stretchable perovskite LEDs, which can be used for phototherapy. The flexible nature of the LEDs will allow for more affordable and more portable phototherapeutic devices for curing skin diseases such as skin ulcers, skin rash, acne, and jaundice.
In November 2017, Xin won the People's Choice Award in the Three Minute Thesis Competition. Xin expressed that this was one of her greatest accomplishments at FSU, since English is her second language. "I felt so amazed that there are so many people interested in my research, although I could not speak English perfectly, and I only had three minutes to explain my research."
“My advice for students who want to go to graduate school is to follow your heart. Your interest and persistence will bring you to the life you want.”
"When I'm free on weekends, I will go to the Leach Center to swim," Xin said. "Sometimes I will read novels at home. I love English literature and William Shakespeare."
