Why FSU?

When applying to graduate schools, I knew I wanted to research racial prejudice across several different domains. When I interviewed at FSU, my goals and research interests highly aligned with my current advisor's interests. Throughout my interviews, I also got a sense of collaboration from not only the faculty but also the current graduate students in the Department of Psychology, which was very important to me.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I started college when racial disparities in the criminal justice system, specifically police brutality, was widely talked about. I wanted to know more about why racial disparities existed and what it takes to at least minimize those disparities. That led me to do an honor's thesis, which taught me that research is what I ultimately wanted to do as a career.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

We are part of a diverse society, where prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination exist. My research helps better understand why these attitudes and behaviors exist. Understanding the underlying mechanisms can help provide more beneficial and effective interventions.

Career aspirations

My ultimate goal is to go into academia. My professors in college were the main reason why I continued down the psychology path, so I can only hope I can provide inspiration for future students.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

You need to be absolutely certain about your research interests because you will be spending the next couple years mostly focusing on those interests. There is no harm in taking a gap year to explore different areas. The best thing you can do is get more experience, which will help determine what interests you.
