Why FSU?

I chose to attend Florida State University for graduate school because of its renowned research in criminology and its consistent leadership in national rankings.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

During the final year of my undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University, I realized that I would not be fulfilled by ending my academic journey with solely a bachelor’s degree. I have always been interested in the factors that influence human behavior, which has strengthened my desire to expand my knowledge of criminology.

Who has been influential in your graduate career?

God has been the most influential in my graduate journey. Without Him, I would not have been afforded this opportunity, nor would I have been pushed out of my comfort zone to be confident in the gifts and potential He’s placed inside me. Additionally, my loved ones, professors, and even individuals who have crossed my path have played a major role in this chapter, continuously pouring wisdom and affirmations into me to finish strong this last lap.

Career aspirations

My career goal is to pursue avenues within the juvenile justice system where I can make significant contributions to reducing delinquency nationwide. One of my interests is in the relationship between childhood trauma and criminal propensity. I aspire to support youth and families through trauma-informed practices and initiatives that address criminogenic needs.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

My number one piece of advice to someone considering graduate school is to keep the hunger to surpass your goals. Being a true steward of anything in life requires humility and discipline, which will contribute greatly to future success. Staying grounded in your “why” will also push you to stay focused and persevere on this academic path.

Accomplishments during graduate career

One of my most rewarding accomplishments during graduate school has been being selected for the first cohort of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Fellowship. This achievement has been meaningful because it has enriched my understanding of juvenile delinquency and helped connect classroom topics and real-life observations. Gaining insights from world-class professionals in executive offices and the field has also been pivotal to both my personal and professional growth.
