Why FSU?

FSU offered a fit with these interests, and Fulbright made this opportunity possible. I hope to bring this knowledge back to Pakistan and help expand opportunities for others.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I pursued a PhD to grow as a researcher in applied and computational mathematics, with an interest in exploring AI and quantum computing.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

I am building a foundation in applied and computational mathematics at FSU, with plans to explore connections to artificial intelligence or quantum computing. My previous research examined fluid flow and heat transfer using mathematical models and numerical methods. These tools help us understand complex systems, and I hope to apply them to emerging computational challenges.

Who has been influential in your graduate journey?

My family’s support and a close friend’s encouragement have sustained me throughout my journey. As the first university graduate in my immediate and extended family, I want to show young people in my community that financial hardship does not define their potential. Seeing others inspired by my journey pursue education and careers gives me purpose and keeps me moving forward.

Career aspirations

I aim to develop mathematical models and computational algorithms with potential applications in AI or quantum computing. Upon returning to Pakistan, I plan to establish a research group, build international collaborations, and train future researchers in these areas.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Start by identifying the questions that excite you and finding programs and mentors whose research aligns with your interests. Graduate school takes persistence, independent thinking, and patience with setbacks. Seek advice and funding opportunities early, and do not let your background make you underestimate your potential.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I am proud of publishing research from my master’s work, earning Fulbright, and leading career development and community outreach at Sukkur IBA University’s BBSIMS Dadu Campus before joining FSU. I helped students pursue scholarships and internships and worked with families to address concerns about university costs, inclusion, and their daughters’ safety. Fulbright is especially meaningful because it allows me to share Pakistan’s cultural diversity, learn from others, and bring broader perspectives back to the students I will teach.

  • Fulbright Foreign Student Award for PhD study at Florida State University
  • Undergraduate merit scholarship awarded for four years
  • Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme award received in 2015 for academic achievement
  • MS merit scholarship, Sukkur IBA University

Organizations you are part of at FSU

I have attended events hosted by the SIAM Student Chapter, Mathematics Graduate Student Council, Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), InternatioNole, and Muslim Student Union.

Hobbies outside academics

In my spare time, I enjoy playing pickleball, going to the gym, taking walks, and exploring the local area. I also enjoy movies, music, and getting to know people from different backgrounds.
