Why FSU?

Obtaining a law degree has always be a goal of mine. I looked into getting a Juris Doctorate, but with working full time, that wasn’t an option for me. I started doing some research and learned about the online Juris Master's Program at FSU. It is one of the top online law programs, so I knew it was perfect for me. I did all the legwork, and the rest is history.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I had already earned a master's degree in Security Administration, but I decided that it wouldn’t benefit me. I got my B.S. in Criminal Justice and always wanted a law degree. When I retire from the military I want to pursue some type of career in federal law enforcement, so I knew I needed to make myself more marketable. Earning a JM will go a long way in setting myself apart from others.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

Knowing the law is important to me and my future. You could just read the law, but learning the law and the different scenarios that it is used in has helped me get a better understanding on how to apply it. By the time I graduate from FSU, I want to be proficient in cybersecurity law and use that knowledge to help my future employer.

Describe an aspect of your military service that is especially memorable or exceptional

While I was deployed last year to the Middle East, the draw down of Afghanistan happened. I directly took part in the largest airlift of people in the history of the military. Being able to help those people escape Afghanistan and get to a safer location is one of my most memorable experiences.

Tell us how your military service provided skills and experiences that you were able to apply to your graduate studies.

Understanding the law and applying the law is something we do in the military regularly. Using the knowledge I’ve learned in cybersecurity, and knowing the things to look for, has helped me in my graduate studies. I lean on real-life experiences while I’m completing assignments.

Career aspirations

I have approximately 5.5 years left until I retire from the military. Once I get closer to retirement, I’ll start looking into a job in federal law enforcement. I want to continue my federal service in some way and continue to protect this great nation.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Completing a graduate degree is fun and rewarding, but you’ll have to work for it, so be ready. While working toward a graduate degree sounds scary, it’s not, and don’t be intimidated by the work.
