College: Engineering
Degree Program: Industrial Engineering
Degree: Master's

Why FSU?

As a preeminent research university in the state of Florida, and one of the United States' elite research universities, FSU prides itself on the dissemination of state-of-the-art knowledge and offers unique resources and opportunities for research and learning in my field. I want to identify with the reputation FSU has built in training and the practice of Engineering through the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering so that I can position myself to become one of the top leaders in my industry.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I wanted to advance my career and gain a deeper understanding of my Industrial Engineering practice, especially with the evolving application of innovative optimization modeling and data science tools/technologies to solve problems in this field. I saw a need for specialized skills and knowledge in this new process using the latest optimization modeling and machine learning tools for tackling challenges in the supply chain and logistics aspect of Industrial Engineering, and I wanted to be at the forefront of it.

Importance and/or impact of research and work

My research is focused on the application of data analytics and mathematical optimization models for planning of garbage collection clusters of Tallahassee residents. Given the complex operational and logistical activities involved, and the rapid growth in population in Tallahassee, I work to develop efficient vehicle routes for the Solid Waste Management Service Unit to meet the various customer demands within the shortest possible time and travel distances in order to reduce the large expenditures from the yearly budget allocation to waste management. This research will also contribute to saving carbon emissions that endanger the environment and health conditions of people.

Career aspirations

I plan to join the industry after my program and pursue a career in supply chain and logistics management. With my skills in data science and mathematical optimization, I want to become a supply chain analyst and grow to become a specialist in supply chain operations.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

Reflect on your career goals and consider how a graduate degree fits into your overall plan. Be prepared for a challenging but rewarding experience, and stay focused on your long-term goals.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I completed a team project on American Airline Air Cargo Planning Problem (Air Cargo Palletization). I was nominated for the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Book Stipend Award. I joined the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Advisory Council (DEI AC). Lastly, I received the Florida/West Africa Linkage Institute Tuition Waiver.
